Algebra solver
Algebra help that names the rule, not just the value of x
This free AI algebra solver works through linear and quadratic equations, systems, factoring, rational expressions, exponents and inequalities one line at a time. Type the problem, paste it, or upload a photo of the page.
Algebra is the subject where the final answer is worth the least on its own. Knowing that x = 12 tells you nothing about which term was moved across the equals sign, why both sides were divided by the same number, or whether the equation had a second solution you dropped. Every step here names the operation applied and shows the line it produces.
That makes the working checkable. Hold it next to your own solution, find the first line where the two differ, and ask a follow-up about that one step rather than starting the problem over.
Solve for x: 3x - 7 = 2x + 5
1Subtract 2x from both sides to collect the variable on the left: x - 7 = 5
2Add 7 to both sides to isolate x: x = 12
3Substitute back: 3(12) - 7 = 29 and 2(12) + 5 = 29, so the solution checks
Answer
x = 12
The operation is named before the next line appears.
What this algebra solver handles
The four groups most algebra courses are built from, whether you are in Algebra 1, Algebra 2 or an introductory college algebra class.
Equations — linear, quadratic (factoring, completing the square, the quadratic formula), rational, radical and absolute value.
Systems — substitution, elimination and graphical solutions for two and three variables.
Functions and inequalities — domain and range, composition, inverses, linear and quadratic inequalities, interval notation.
Once the algebra turns into a derivative or an integral, the AI calculus solver takes it from there; matrices, row reduction and eigenvalues belong to the linear algebra solver.
One problem set, one rule per line
2x^2 - 5x - 3 = 0 → x = 3 or x = -1/2
Factoring
2x + y = 11 and x - y = 1 → (4, 3)
Elimination
4 - 3x > 13 → x < -3
Inequality, sign flipped
Three ways to solve a quadratic, and when each one fits
A quadratic equation can be solved three different ways. The solver picks one, says why it fits the coefficients in front of it, and works it through — the same judgement the exam expects you to make.
Factoring
Quickest when the quadratic splits over the integers. For 2x^2 - 5x - 3 = 0, look for two numbers multiplying to (2)(-3) = -6 and adding to -5: they are -6 and 1. Split the middle term into -6x + x, group into 2x(x - 3) + 1(x - 3), and factor out (x - 3)(2x + 1) = 0. The zero-product rule gives x = 3 and x = -1/2.
Completing the square
The method to reach for when the question asks for vertex form or the factors are not obvious. Divide through by the leading coefficient, halve the coefficient of x, square it, and add it to both sides. For x^2 + 6x - 7 = 0 that is x^2 + 6x + 9 = 16, so (x + 3)^2 = 16 and x = 1 or x = -7. The same steps are what derive the quadratic formula in the first place.
The quadratic formula
Always works: x = (-b ± sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)) / 2a. For 2x^2 - 5x - 3 = 0, the discriminant b^2 - 4ac = 25 + 24 = 49, a perfect square, which is exactly the signal that the equation would have factored. A negative discriminant means no real solution, and a discriminant of zero means one repeated root.
The discriminant is the thing worth checking first: it tells you how many real solutions exist before you commit to a method.
Solve an algebra problem from a photo
Upload a photo of the page and the solver reads the expression from the image before solving it. Superscripts, fraction bars, radicals and the difference between a minus sign and a subtraction are all read off the page, so you do not have to retype an equation into plain text and hope the notation survives.
Handwritten working is read the same way. That is what makes it useful for checking: photograph the four lines you wrote, and the solver compares them against its own rather than starting from a clean sheet.
Photos of the textbook page with the exercise on it
Scanned problem sets, one question at a time
Your own handwritten working, read straight off the page
PDF worksheets, with the question picked out by number
When part of an equation is cut off or unreadable, the solver asks for it rather than guessing a coefficient — a wrong number quietly invalidates every line after it.
Exponents, fraction bars and radicals read off the page
Word problems, turned into an equation first
Most of the marks lost on an algebra word problem are lost before any algebra happens, in the translation from a sentence into an equation. The solver does that step out loud: it names what the variable stands for, writes the relationship the sentence describes, and only then starts rearranging.
Take a classic: two numbers differ by 4 and their sum is 26. Let the smaller be x, so the larger is x + 4. The sum gives x + (x + 4) = 26, which is 2x + 4 = 26, so x = 11 and the numbers are 11 and 15. The algebra is two lines; the setup is the part worth seeing written down.
What the variable is defined to represent, stated before it is used
The equation the sentence translates into, and which phrase produced it
Each rearrangement, with the operation applied to both sides named
A check that substitutes the answer back into the original wording
Translate the sentence
Twice a number, decreased by 7, is 15 →
2x - 7 = 15
2x - 7 = 152(x - 7) = 157 - 2x = 15
"Decreased by 7" applies to twice the number, not to the number before doubling — the brackets change the answer from x = 11 to x = 14.5.
Check your own algebra working and find the mistake
An answer that disagrees with yours tells you only that something went wrong, not where. Paste or photograph your own working next to the problem and ask where the two solutions diverge.
In algebra the divergence is usually one of a handful of things: a sign lost when a bracket was expanded, the inequality sign not flipped after dividing by a negative, one side of the equation multiplied but not the other, or a solution that has to be discarded because it makes a denominator zero. The solver traces your steps against its own and points at the first line that differs.
where did I go wrong
check my working
why is this solution rejected
Your working
-3x > 9, so x > -3
-3x > 9, so x < -3
Dividing both sides by a negative number reverses the inequality sign. The interval is (-infinity, -3), not (-3, infinity).
The first line where the two solutions differ.
From Algebra 1 to college algebra
The same solver covers both ends of the sequence — the difference is which topics show up, not how the working is written.
Pre-algebra and Algebra 1
Where the rules of rearranging are still being learned, so every line is shown rather than compressed. Negative numbers, fractions in an equation and the order of operations cause most of the lost marks here.

Why did the inequality sign flip on line three?
Because both sides were divided by -3. Dividing or multiplying an inequality by a negative number reverses the direction of the sign, which is why the interval came out as x < -3 rather than x > -3.
